We are not a cult.
Or, technically, an ‘official’ burn.
We are not affiliated with Burning Man, but we’re big ol’ fans.
Their principles are what make their events unique. They are a code, and are required reading for all of our members. They are underpinned by consent, which needs to be understood by everyone.
Radical Inclusion
Everyone is included. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community. All are welcome to participate.
Communal Effort
We make miracles because we work together. Everyone who comes here puts in their fair share of effort, and contributes their hands to the general mish mash of madness.
Gifting
The value of a gift is unconditional. We gift unconditionally, without expecting anything in return. The gift of time, to the gift of food, ideas or experiences. When we all plan on gifting, suddenly there’s surprises for everyone.
Civic Responsibility
We exist in careful balance with the real world. We work hard to keep that balance, respecting neighbours, locals and their traditions.
Decommodification
By removing the desire to consume we reduce the risk of being exploited by commercial greed or want, creating instead, a culture of gifting and creativity.
Leave No Trace
We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities. We clean up after ourselves and leave places as we found them. There is a recent move to upgrade this to leave a better trace, which we fully support. This is particularly important in ReBurn. We are guests here. All of us will have shifts caring for the land.
Radical Self Reliance
ReBurn has no safety net. The playa may provide, but nothing is guaranteed. We all need to come prepared, to bring enough for ourselves, for day, for night and for others. This principle also encourages you to ‘own your shit’ internally. You are strong. That’s why you’re here.
Participation
We believe that transformative change can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to co-create. Everyone is invited to play. You are here, get involved. If not now, then when.
Radical Self Expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than them can determine its content. It can take whatever form they choose, so long as it doesn’t harm others.
Immediacy
Immediate experience is one of the defining touchstones of value in our culture. There is no substitute for really being in the moment. Allow yourself to truly be in the moment, forget other distractions, and commit to truly feeling what is: now.
Consent
Everything here is underpinned by the 11th principle: consent. We are not taught consent properly as a society, we all need to unlearn so much, and keep learning how to be better to one another. If it’s not a ‘heck yes’, it’s a ‘no’. Further education in this is a core part of ReBurn.
